About Brimbank City Council

Brimbank CouncilThe City of Brimbank is the second largest municipality in Melbourne with an area of 123 square kilometres and more than 170,000 residents.  A large part of the Brooklyn Industrial Precinct sits within the Brimbank CC.

Brimbank City Council is committed to providing facilities and services within its industrial precincts that facilitate investment, provide infrastructure and create a positive local climate for business to thrive and create employment.  The Brooklyn Industrial Precinct is a priority for Brimbank City Council for review and progress towards developing a long term management plan for the precinct.

The majority of new users operating in the Brooklyn Industrial Precinct would be required to apply for a planning permit unless there is a current planning permit existing on the site for the same use or it enjoys existing use rights.  Planning permits that are issued belong to the land and are not transferrable to other sites.  Planning permits generally include conditions and endorsed plans for the business to operate within.  Brimbank City Council receives and assesses applications for planning permits by industries.  The Council also has authorised officers that check compliance with permit conditions.

It is the responsibility of Local Government to investigate community reports of breaches of planning conditions.  As a Local Government authority, Brimbank City Council also meets regularly with individual businesses and can raise residents’ concerns with individual businesses.

The Council is actively participating in a joint enforcement program with the EPA, Maribyrnong City Council and Hobsons Bay City Council to address non compliance issues and check that existing operators are complying with their permit conditions where applicable to reduce dust, odour and noise related issues.
